Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
Teach the Next Generation of Pilots
Becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) is one of the most rewarding and valuable steps in a professional pilot’s career. As a CFI, you’ll have the opportunity to train new pilots, share your knowledge of aviation, and build valuable flight experience while working in the industry.
At Higher Ground Helicopters, our Certified Flight Instructor program prepares commercial pilots to confidently step into a teaching role. Through advanced instruction techniques and in-depth knowledge training, you’ll develop the skills needed to effectively guide students through their aviation journey.
What You’ll Learn
The CFI program focuses on both advanced aviation knowledge and the ability to communicate that knowledge clearly to students. Instructors must demonstrate a deep understanding of helicopter operations while also developing strong teaching and leadership skills.
During training, you will learn:
-
Effective aviation instruction and teaching techniques
-
Advanced helicopter flight demonstrations
-
Evaluating and correcting student performance
-
Risk management and safety oversight
-
FAA regulations and training standards
-
Structuring and delivering ground school lessons
This training ensures you are prepared to teach both in the classroom and in the cockpit.
Training Requirements
To become a Certified Flight Instructor, pilots must already hold a Commercial Pilot License and meet the additional requirements established by the FAA. The program typically includes:
-
Advanced ground instruction and lesson planning
-
Demonstration and practice of instructional flight maneuvers
-
Preparation for the FAA Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) exam
-
FAA Certified Flight Instructor knowledge test
-
A comprehensive practical exam (checkride) with an FAA examiner
The CFI checkride evaluates both your flight proficiency and your ability to effectively teach aviation concepts.
Why Become a Flight Instructor
Many professional pilots choose to become flight instructors because it offers valuable experience and career advantages, including:
-
Building flight hours while working in aviation
-
Strengthening aviation knowledge through teaching
-
Developing leadership and communication skills
-
Gaining real-world experience in pilot training
For many pilots, becoming a CFI is an important step toward advanced aviation careers such as emergency services, charter operations, or specialized helicopter work.
