Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

Turn Your Passion for Flying Into a Career

A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) allows you to be compensated for flying, opening the door to a wide range of professional opportunities in the aviation industry. For pilots who want to move beyond recreational flying and pursue aviation as a career, this certification is the next major step.

At Higher Ground Helicopters, our Commercial Pilot training program is designed to develop the advanced skills, professionalism, and decision-making required of professional helicopter pilots. Through structured instruction and real-world flight experience, you’ll gain the confidence and expertise needed to operate safely and efficiently in a variety of flying environments.

Advanced Flight Training

Commercial pilot training builds on the foundation established during Private Pilot and Instrument training. Students refine their technical abilities while learning the higher standards required for professional flight operations.

During this program, pilots develop proficiency in:

  • Advanced helicopter maneuvers and flight control

  • Precision takeoffs and landings

  • Complex navigation and cross-country planning

  • Advanced emergency procedures

  • Risk management and operational decision-making

  • Professional aviation standards and safety practices

This training prepares pilots to operate at a professional level while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Training Requirements

To earn a Commercial Pilot License, students must complete the required flight hours and training set by the FAA. The program typically includes:

  • A minimum of 150 total flight hours

  • Advanced dual instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor

  • Solo flight experience to demonstrate independent proficiency

  • Cross-country navigation flights

  • Preparation for the FAA written knowledge exam

  • A final practical flight test (checkride) with an FAA examiner

Many students use this phase of training to build flight time while preparing for their first professional aviation roles.

Career Opportunities

Earning a Commercial Pilot License opens the door to a variety of helicopter aviation careers. Commercial helicopter pilots may work in industries such as:

  • Aerial photography and film

  • Tourism and sightseeing flights

  • Utility and infrastructure operations

  • Agricultural and environmental work

  • Charter and private aviation

Many pilots continue their training by becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) to build flight hours while teaching the next generation of pilots.
