Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII)

Train Pilots to Master Instrument Flight

The Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII) rating allows experienced flight instructors to teach pilots how to safely operate under instrument flight rules (IFR). This advanced certification expands your qualifications as an instructor and enables you to train pilots in one of the most technical and safety-critical areas of aviation.

At Higher Ground Helicopters, our CFII program prepares instructors to confidently teach instrument procedures, navigation systems, and IFR operations. Through focused instruction and practical training, you’ll gain the knowledge and teaching skills required to guide students through instrument flight training.

What You’ll Learn

The CFII program builds on your experience as both a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor. Training focuses on deepening your understanding of instrument flight while developing the skills needed to effectively teach complex IFR concepts.

During the program, you will learn how to instruct students in:

  • Instrument flight rules (IFR) procedures and regulations

  • Advanced navigation systems and avionics

  • Instrument departures, approaches, and holding procedures

  • Interpreting weather data and managing instrument conditions

  • Air traffic control communication and coordination

  • Emergency procedures during instrument flight

You’ll also develop techniques for teaching instrument scanning, situational awareness, and cockpit resource management.

Training Requirements

To earn a Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument rating, pilots must already hold both a Commercial Pilot License and a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certification.

Training typically includes:

  • Advanced instrument ground instruction

  • Practice teaching IFR procedures and navigation concepts

  • Flight training focused on instrument instruction techniques

  • Preparation for the FAA CFII knowledge exam

  • A final practical exam (checkride) with an FAA examiner

This program ensures instructors are fully prepared to train pilots in instrument flight operations.

Why Earn a CFII Rating

Adding a CFII rating enhances your value as a professional instructor and expands your teaching opportunities. Benefits include:

  • The ability to teach instrument rating students

  • Increased demand as a flight instructor

  • Additional flight hours and instructional experience

  • Expanded knowledge of advanced aviation systems and procedures

Many instructors pursue a CFII rating to broaden their instructional capabilities and accelerate their professional aviation careers.

Expand Your Instructor Qualifications

At Higher Ground Helicopters, we are committed to developing highly skilled instructors who can train safe, confident pilots. Our CFII program provides the expertise and mentorship needed to teach advanced instrument flight training.

Take the next step in your aviation career and expand your instructor qualifications with the CFII program.
